I’m suspecting that the flex display cable is either messed up or losing contact somehow. We don’t know how old yours is as we don’t have the model, but some of the early ones from the 90s-early 2000s have problematic lasers with known reliability issues as they aged out, or are sensitive to burned media. Ah this is simple. when you look at the ignition, where the key goes, there should be a little icon of a mower with an arrow. After you start the mower, turn the key to this position. If it isnt there it wont go reverse, so after starting just move the key to that position and it should fix it....
